We are working on the historic renovation/conversion of a 1931 school building which has a pyramidal roof above the main entrance.  Covering the roof are 12" x 12" x 1/8" asbestos shingles laid diagonally.  The original colors were blue and red but have faded to gray and light pink.  About a dozen pieces are either broken or missing.  I am looking for replacements and suggestions.

I assume you've tried the sources listed here:
    http://www.slateroofers.org/sources_asbestos_tile.html

It reads slate roofers, but there used to be some resources for diamond patterned asbestos tiles listed here.

A couple of years ago, we re-roofed a Lodge with diamond shaped metal shingles, since that was closest we could find to match the deteriorated diamond shaped asphalt shingles. The metal shingles matched in size and shape, character defining elements for our 1925 Lodge.

You may be out of luck.  What you are describing is called the french method asphalt shingle.  I was looking for this style of shingle when I was renovating my old farmhouse and apparently Globe was the last company that manufactured this style of shingle.  I believe they were bought out by GAF or one of the large roofing manufacturers and then shut down.  I hope I am wrong and there are still some small boutique manufacturers in your region, but that is what I have heard here in the southeast.
