  • 1.  Historic metal tile roofing

I am on a local Design Review Board for a historic neighborhood that has a contributing residence dating to around 1900 that features a metal tile roof.  The tiles are fabricated to mimic clay tile and are nailed on to the roof sheathing like shingles.  Over the years, many of the tiles have been damaged by foot traffic and the owner is seeking a way to repair/replace the roof.  I am familiar with this roofing from publications, but have never worked with them personally and it is an exceedingly rare type in these parts.  Does anyone have any good suggestions?

    Thanks
    Jim

    James :

You may consider contacting 3 different tile roofing companies in your area, and having them take a look at the tiles, and perhaps they may have good suggestions -

If on the National Registry refer to Preservation Brief #4...http://www.nps.gov/hps/tps/briefs/brief04.htm

I did a state registered building in South Texas wherein the Contractor was able to find modern replica clay tiles that matched the original 1920 era tile.  I opted to follow similar guidelines as set forth by the Preservation Brief with some tweaking, etc. due to the varying degrees of reusability of any given tile and the condition of the substrate and underlying structure, etc.

I basically documented where the tiles were pulled from, had them numbered and sorted via quadrant and reinstalled (where possible) back to the same quadrant.

The key for your project will be finding someone to replicate the original tile.
