It is not the historical method, but I have been experimenting with using Gorilla Glue for these cracks. The glue expands to fill the gap, and then can be sanded down and stained during refinishing. It expands and contracts with the wood after curing. The only problem is that during the curing, it develops bubbles which result in a honeycombed, non-smooth top surface.
