Our "bible" when I was in school was The Repair and Maintenance of Houses by Ian A. Melville & Ian A. Gordon. But a more recently published book, which address the more current and philosophical aspects of preservation, is Historic Preservation: Caring for Our Expanding Legacy by Michael A. Tomlan.
