    What programs are others currently using.

    We use Microsoft Project but we are looking for something else to improve the ability to see who is working on each project.

    We also use Microsoft Project but find it a rather "thick" program with a lot of variables that which we never use.  I think the program has a lot of good features, including tracking manpower, but it is a matter of learning to utilize it and then massaging it to figure which aspects fit the cfirm and which can be left behind.  We are still going through this process.
    As far as tracking manpower, it would be good to have a program which linked to our time keeping and manpower management charting programs.  The only link between these now is the project manager's tenacity to keep them all current and consistent.

    There is a free project management program called "Open Project."  It is loosely based on MS Project.  If you just want to create timelines it should work for you.

    Another free option to look at is GanttProject (http://www.ganttproject.biz/) for simple scheduling and resources.
