  • 1.  What information is found where in a CD set?

    Am looking for documents, white papers or studies that discuss what information should be found where in a Construction Document set.  Over the years I have been involved in a fair number of friendly debates over where best to locate CD information.  The goal being to reference information once and in a location that helps assure that information will be found by the general contractor, subcontractors, suppliers and those doing construction administration.

    Have you looked at the ConDoc system? I've used it since about 1998. Not necessarily perfect, but it is a set format that should be recognizable to contractors.

    This issue is comprehensively addressed in CSI's Uniform Drawing System (UDS), which is an integral component of the U.S. National CAD Standard (NCS), www.nationalcadstandard.org. NCS builds upon and extends the earlier ConDoc system, no longer published, that was mentioned in a post by another member.

    In addition to the Uniform Drawing System reference posted by Michael, I also recommend the following:
    • AIA Document A521-1995 Uniform Location of Subject Matter (this has been under revision for several years)
    • AIA MasterSpec Drawing Coordination Checklists - issued for each specification section, indicating content that specifications anticipate will be represented graphically
    • Project Resource Manual/CSI Manual of Practice - Module 5 Construction Documents

    These should keep you busy and serve as a good basis for developing your firm standards.
