I've been a consultant for a number of years, helping smaller firms implement BIM with ACAD Architecture (a surprisingly good product at this point) and Revit.
I think for BIM to be implemented effectively, all parties have to be familiar with it: engineers, consultants and contractors. Furthermore, for the resulting BIM model to remain useful, the client's facilities department should be prepared to keep it up to date and use it to organize maintenance efforts. I did speak with a Facilities Manager from a West Coast university who told me he's been able to coordinate his maintenance efforts across his multi-building campus since they're mostly in an admittedly huge Revit file.
