Just wondering why this project of a highly specialized topic, and prohibitively limited scope is posted to the entire AIA membership. And what does this have to do with TAP?

    Hi Charles

AIA TAP will be sponsoring a panel discussion at the 2014 ACADIA Conference, furthermore we believe the topics being discussed in the conference are completely relevant towards practice and we are hoping to engage more of the AIA community in our event.  The speakers at the event will include a number of high-profile practitioners pushing the boundaries of technology in practice.  We are currently working on getting registered to offer AIA CEU's for attendance.

I hope this helps to clarify.

    Best,

    Alvin

    Hi everyone

For those interested in submitting papers to the conference, due to overwhelming demand the ACADIA Call for Papers DEADLINE has been extended to April 14!!

If you haven't submitted already, now is your chance!  We are looking for papers from practitioners, researchers, and academics alike who have innovative computational design research to share.

There  is no misunderstanding on my part. Your appeal is solely to participating in an exclusive, members only event. There is nothing about anyone attending any conference. You owe an apology to the whole community.

    Charles-
I apologize for the confusion created by posting a call for papers without a general announcement of the conference. To clarify: the ACADIA conference is October 20-25 at USC in LA. Most of the paper sessions will be on the 23rd-25th. The conference website is http://2014.acadia.org. ACADIA is open to anyone and TAP's participation allows our members to attend for the same price as ACADIA members. I posted the call for papers in case anyone in TAP wanted to submit a paper. TAP and ACADIA have overlapping interests and I think members of both organizations would benefit from more interaction. AIA LU's may be available for attending sessions at the ACADIA conference. I'll set the membership know as soon as that is finalized. I hope this corrects my earlier oversight.

    Thank you Alvin and David,

This is exactly the sort of thing that I subscribe to this list to hear about.  I'd never heard of acadia before this email, and as new AEC professional coming from years in the world of computer science, I was pleased to add it to my research tool belt.  I'd bet good money that most of the software developers at Autodesk and Graphisoft played one (or more) of the keynote speakers complex urban simulation games as a kid.  I'll even bet they'll gladly name them as inspirations for putting in their resumes at those companies.  Quickly browsing acadia's main website, the topics they concern themselves with cover a broad range of topics important to technology used by architects.

I look around today and see many new buildings bearing the obvious marks of tools like Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, et al.  While these tools save us time, they're not as agile as the pencil or the brush.  Using them to bring a design outside of the space of thought requires thinking constrained to artificial limits that graphite never imposes.

Exploring the philosophies informing the design of our digital tools is incredibly important. Why? The tools leave their marks our work. It's somewhat amusing to me seeing award-winning building forms that mimic the low-polygon, flat-textured 3D renderings from the 1980s and 90s.  Folks, those clunky representations were stop-gaps on the way to what's come since.

    Again, my thanks.

Speaking for myself, I find the idea interesting. No need to apologize to me. But Alvin, I apologize to you for your reception here.
