I received my first issue if Architectural Record Houses in 1972, my senior year in high school. I, for years looked forward to these issues. I looked for homes by Gwathmey, Graves and a whols contingent of well done homes by famous and at times, not so famous architects.
I quit looking forward to this issue of Record by 2000, excatly for the reasons David illustrates. The worst aspect being the general public seeing these images, asking me to design them into their projects and then me trying to explain that our building code will not allow that type of detail. The client then wonders what the hell is wrong with me - I must not be a very good architect.
I was at Grassroots 2011. Bob Ivy, FAIA was very visible at the conference. I hope his role as EVP/CEO will put us into a direction that will put the profession where it needs to be. I personally do not care if the project is classical or modern, just well done and puts a good light on architects and architecture.
