  • 1.  Recent RIBA study of relevance of architectural profession

    Posted 03-23-2011 03:16 AM
Just came across this RIBA weblink regarding the state of the architectural profession and the need for redefinition. This year-long study gives a chilling assessment of where the profession will be in 2025.
The AIA should be providing similar studies for this country's particular situation.

I believe you will all find many of the same fundamental issues expressed in recent postings...
Our concern needs to be an increase in perceived relevance of architecture with regard to public opinion.

Dear Mr. Hobbs, At this point I'm both bored and yet still intrigued with this topic and am looking forward to following the link you've provided to the RIBA article.  I feel as though our profession (at least the discussion boards) have shown us as merely chasing out tails on this subject and looking a bit directionless.  All I see are publications saying basically the same things in slightly different ways with no solid solutions...I guess we're still in the shock phase and are trying to assess and define the scope of the problem.  We will surely come up with valid solutions any minute now.  Most likely, the solutions will come from the next generation of architects who are not blind-sided by post-modernism and the pursuit of some undefined, unknown status of perfection.

Despite my rant of frustration, I'm grateful for your posted link and am hoping to read some fresh news!

    Sincerely yours,
    Tara

    Kimble,

     V e r y      i n t e r e s t i n g  !!

In this age of technology trumping crafts, it appears as though the craft of architecture may be trumped by technology also.     The craft of architecture was built on the relationship of the architect with his/her client.    Technology's client is the anonymous universal client.     Once the anonymous client buys an anonymous home they start the task of personalizing it.      This is done by painting, modifying interior finishes, adding a room for a new baby, etc..     This goes on without any thought of hiring an architect to design a custom, personalized home for them.   What is needed is to help the public to understand the role of the architect in their lives?     Television has boosted the role of the interior designer (and the chief).   This ought to be a model for the AIA to boost architecture and urban design.     Maybe a series on "SUPER ARCHITECT !!!!" is the answer.
