    Art Nouveau was called Jugendstil in parts of northern Europe including Latvia. Mikhail Eisenstein, 1867-1921, was an important Jugendstil architect. Born in St Petersberg; his father a German Jew and his mother a Swede, he completed a number of buildings in Riga. At the time of the Russian Revolution, he moved to Berlin.
