I didn't know any German before but now I do...: gesamtkunstwerks..and I experienced it...more than once.!
In 1966, as a Penn State architecture student traveling abroad in Italy, I came across Giovanni Michelucci's La Chiesa Dell Autostrada del Sole - The Church on the Autostrada of the Sun, outside of Florence. Google it. Looking back at the research paper I prepared for school credit, I looked at some of my comments. After entering the building, and being drawn up, down, and around the structure I said "This is architecture!"
What an impact an experience like that can have on a young architecture student. Here it is 47 years later and I still remember the experience quite vividly. I've had the experience to consult (in acoustics) on many worship projects in my career, including four major cathedrals.
I also remember going to the site of Antonio Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and being awe struck at his creation, under construction. Having recently heard that the church is open, although still unfinished, I long to return to see it.

In the US also around mid '60's, I experienced Saarinen's new TWA Terminal at JFK Airport (since renovated...but not the same feeling for me) and was again awestruck at the architecture.    All great experiences - that have a lasting impression; and so blessed to have been able to travel.
