I will first layout some statistics from the session presentation:
Total Building Stock in the U.S.:
275,000,000,000 sf
GSA Building Stock:
5,000,000,000 sf
8,300 buildings
377 courthouses
AOC (Administrative Office of the Courts [California]) Building Stock:
20,000,000+ sf
532 courthouses
In general, buildings in the U.S. account for 49% of greenhouse gas production. A large amount of these buildings were aging and in need of renovation for their workspace or to reduce maintenance cost and impact to the environment. While demolish and rebuilt will bring an economic boost to our economy, in many cases a thorough study of first cost and life cycle cost can result in a solution that is cost effective and sustainable. The case study of the Peter W. Rodino Federal Office Building and Courthouse in this presentation choose an Over-Clad Existing Facade solution which gave the 43 year old building a face lift, energy improvement and no tenant relocation during construction.
