AAJ 2011 Conference: How do we tackle the growing expectations of design-build pursuits

  • 1.  AAJ 2011 Conference: How do we tackle the growing expectations of design-build pursuits

A lively session with 17 architect, builder, and client panelists grappled with the logistics of making design-build a sustainable project procurement process. Issues such as costs to submit, conflicts of loyalty, separation of architect from the user, unclear expectations, and flexibility were discussed. Benefits such as greater creativity, profitability, and reduced litigation were identified. Overall it seems like a process that is here to stay and is quite successful (and liked by our public clients), but that needs to be modified to be a truly sustainable delivery option for the architectural profession. What are your thoughts? What do you think needs to change in order for your firm to be able to pursue design-build projects successfully?

This is such a good topic for all of the players in the design-build equation.  By bringing together owners, builders, architects, subs, and PM/CM's, I think we can design some models that make design-build acquisition process more sutainable.  Jim Mueller's insight to bring this topic to light through the large panel may be just the thing to ignite the industry's passion to take this issue on.  As a National AIA board member, I will be taking this to the AIA.  Pat Crosby, DBIA board member who was in attendance, suggests that a task force alliance between AIA, DBIA, and AGC could be the way to start of designing these models.  I'm "in" for that, and look forward to working on this issue the next year.
