A federal prison advisory group in Washington state has recently recommended that state corrections officers be armed with pepper spray and fitted with panic buttons. The advice comes after Governor Chris Gregoire requested a review following the slaying of Corrections Officer Jayme Biendl at the Monroe Correctional Complex by a prison inmate. The governor agreed with the opinions of the advisory group when she recently spoke at a Washington state prison. She also added that the state needs to improve the tracking of on-duty corrections staff.
