The AIA's Residential Knowledge Community (KC) is seeking new members for the 2012 Advisory Group (AG). AG members are re-appointed by the AIA President annually, though a standard term is three years.
The AIA Residential KC tracks housing issues and develops relationships with industry stakeholders to encourage and promote safe, attractive, accessible, and affordable housing for all Americans. Members of the Residential KC Advisory Group are expected to actively participate in monthly conference calls, as well as to attend at least two of the following events in person each year: AIA Grassroots (Winter), AIA Convention (Spring), AIA Knowledge Leadership Assembly (Summer). Limited funding is available from the AIA to offset the travel costs for AG members to each of these events.
Additionally, members of the Residential AG are expected to actively participate in one of the following three standing committees: (1) communications, (2) education, or (3) awards. Each AG member is also expected to organize at least one webinar annually (with AIA staff support) and to regularly post relevant housing and design information to the Residential KC's listserve.
On an as-needed basis, the Residential AG will provide advice and suggestions to the appropriate AIA staff or leadership regarding housing-related content for education and publications, as well as relevant policy and government affairs issues. The Residential AG is also responsible for implementing the AIA's Housing and HUD/AIA award programs, including related sessions at AIA Convention.
The Residential AG works in collaboration with other AGs, including Custom Residential, Small Project Practitioners, Historic Resources, Design for Aging, and the Committee on the Environment. We are looking for practitioners and academics involved in a range of housing-related areas, including affordable housing, multi-family housing, production housing, and other specialties such as student housing or international housing work. A history of volunteer leadership in local, state or national AIA activities is preferred but not required.
Earlier this year, the AIA created a separate AIA Custom Residential Knowledge Community, and as a result we are currently seeking applications for four AG slots, including the unexpired terms of two former AG members. Any AIA Member or Associate Member in good standing is encouraged to apply by submitting the following documents to Tamzin Howerton, tamzinhowerton@aia.org by Monday, September 5, 2011.
Application requirements:
- Letter of interest, highlighting professional housing experience as well as prior volunteer efforts with the AIA and other housing or design-related organizations.
- Current resume or curriculum vitae
