for architect working on projects - planning, housing, retail, etc, - in mixed income communities, this HUD article provides some good observations from several ethnographic studies conducted in Boston and Chicago.

    Katherine and All-

Thank you for sharing this resource. I'd be interested in knowing more about the ways in which architects are addressing community interaction in their work in mixed-income communities.

This issue is particularly important as we are learning more about social isolation, which increased from 10% of the population in 1984 to 25% in 2004, and the challenges of developing trust in diverse communities I find the Saguaro Seminar founded by Robert Putnam of Bowling Alone fame to be a good source of information on this issue, http://www.hks.harvard.edu/programs/saguaro/about/who-we-are.

In the Housing KC webinar Research and Practice, Jamie Horwitz describes how her research revealed that a variety of types of spaces located on paths within senior housing can facilitate positive interaction. http://network.aia.org/hkc/Resources/ViewDocument/?DocumentKey=6479934c-30aa-4b10-9463-81ad5315b03b

What design strategies are being employed or could be employed to address interaction among diverse populations?

    Kathy

Cohousing neighborhoods, featuring both physical design and intentional social interaction seeking to work against the trending isolation that Putnam documents, is making a more headway, in my opinion.
