I have written a 5000 word essay on this subject, with line illustrations, that has been languishing for a couple of years while other involvements have consumed my attention. It landed on the back burner after some initial difficulty in unearthing a publishing venue that showed interest, falling as it does somewhat between the missions of the scholarly and the popular press.  Thanks in advance for thoughts on potential outlets.

I would look at Journal of Urban Design. There have been a number of articles about public spaces.

You could post it here as a discussion topic or as a blog. Want to do that?
