    Readers of my regular entries will notice that this article specifically about buses and their operations is part of a series of article about US urban transit.

    What it takes to provide a bus ride for 250,000 people a day

    Whether you never step into a transit bus or whether you are a daily rider, you would typically neither know nor care how many buses the Maryland Transit Administration operates (about 700), how many routes these buses serve (57 plus 19 commuter routes), what a bus costs (an articulated hybrid bus more than $750,000), when the the typical bus "sleeps (some services run all night but the bulk of buses will be in the garages from 10pm to 4am), what the gas mileage of a bus is (about 3-5 mpg), what the average speed of a transit bus is (about 11mph), how many years the same bus remains in service (about 12)
