     think the answer to the question posed by Nikolaus Philipsen is "yes".  Not only is it possible, the groundwork is being done in network theory and the mathematics of complex adaptive systems to the city itself.  The research (which I am involved in) is interesting and shows strong power law reelationships of population size measuring such variables as linear infrastructure, wealth, productive capabilty etc...
