I find these European bicycle models interesting. They have create a completely different infrastructure to support bicycle traffic. In turn, more people feel more comfortable taking bicycles. One thing missing from the article is that there has always been a thriving destination to get to, typically a dense urban environment. We need to create better places and then find a better way to get there.

Davis, CA does have some designated bicycles paths, http://daviswiki.org/bicycle_rides and http://www.davisbicycles.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/davis_bike_loop_map_10jun12.pdf

A more complete bicycle map of Davis, CA is available at http://cityofdavis.org/media/default/documents/pdf/gis/maps/davis%20bike%20map.pdf.  Note that some newer streets have both designated bike lanes (blue) and separate bike paths (orange) to accommodate the different needs of different types of cyclists (e.g. commuters or excursionists vs. small kids with parents).
