    Artists - the Pawns in Gentrification?

    Gentrification is "the process by which higher income households displace lower income residents of a neighbourhood, changing the essential character and flavour of that neighbourhood" (Brookings Institution).

    "Gentrification is class warfare, often with a racist element. Black property owners have historically been run roughshod over in this city." (Baltimore resident R.B. Jones in the Indypendant Reader)

    "What looks to be a renaissance to some, might feel like a takeover to others."(Lionel Foster, Baltimore Baltimore SUN columnist)

    "Gentrification" Sets Debate on Fire

    Few words inflame tempers as much as "gentrification". Few words are less helpful. This became apparent once again a few days ago when the Design Center Baltimore (D:center) held a "Design Conversation" under the innocent title "Connections".
