In a few hours, the Hilton in Portland will transform into a hub for trailblazers who innovate the facilities that represent the backbone of our justice system. The collaboration that will occur at AAJ will no doubt sway the direction of future facilities towards the vector of thinking these leaders are on. That in itself is amazing.
My motivation, as an AAJ Scholar, is to glean knowledge to share with the larger AIA community in hopes that the industry will be inspired to follow these leaders. Join in the push to innovate; innovate in the face of precedent. I will pledge to do the same.
Justice, law enforcement, and detention facilities demand the most sincere thought, sensitivity, and self reflection. These facilities are monumental signifiers of a vast multifaceted system of values within our society. For that reason, I am humbled to be a part of AAJ this year and to have the opportunity to play a part in the development of these iconic buildings.
