2019 AAJ Journal Q2-Letter from the chair

In this journal we are revving up for our fall conference, Crossing Borders:  Community Focused Justice Interventions in San Diego

But before we pack our bags, we have our interview with our emerging professional Jacob Kummer.  Working in Toronto for NORR Architects, he is an engaging architectural designer working on the New Toronto Courthouse in partnership with Renzo Piano Building Workshop.  If you have the opportunity come to the conference, say hello to Jacob as NORR presents this exciting project in one of the upcoming sessions.

One of the main events in San Diego will be the JRF awards.  Ever wonder what the Jury members are thinking about and considering as they evaluate these projects?  Tedd Howard (a fellow Canadian) generously shares some insightful thoughts on his time in collaboration on the Jury.  Please help me thank him for taking the time to write his observations for us today.

I always enjoy the keynote speakers, but Erin Persky has gone above and beyond to give us some insight into the first of our very dynamic speakers.  She has taken the opportunity to ask some poignant questions of Chief Shelley Zimmerman, the former Police Chief of San Diego and the first female Police Chief of a major city.  The stories are going to be heartwarming, inspiring and hopeful.

Last of all, if we haven’t made our case to entice you to the West Coast, we have a sneak peek at the letters from the conference chairs.  These dedicated individuals have worked tirelessly to organize this gathering of the best in Justice Architecture and Planning.  We look forward to welcoming you to San Diego!  Let us know if you would like to join the Communication Committee.  We would love to talk to you!

Kindest,

Kerry Feeney
