Letter from the Chair 2018 Q3

It was great to see so many people at the AAJ Fall Conference in Jersey City this year!   Technically, this is our last journal of 2018!  We are calling this Q3 as we skipped our usual fall publication, however, this issue will make up for it.  I’ll tell you how now:

First, we will focus on our latest Seasoned Professional, Mr. Larry Hartman.  I had the pleasure working with Larry on the AAJ Communications Committee for the past few years and he was a most generous colleague.  Larry who is recently retired, had a 36-year career focused on justice issues, he has planned and designed a wide range of complex projects including major prisons, large detention centers, forensic mental health and correctional health facilities.  I am looking forward to sharing his interview with you.

The next is a white paper and is a must read for Law Enforcement design professionals as it provides a technical analysis of critical ventilation issues, ammunition adaptability and impact of various gun range design options. It’s a specific area of justice design that most of us could better understand.  Hemna Marwah, an associate at Stantec in Calgary Alberta, does a terrific job (that includes helpful graphics), to walk us through the complexity of these training facilities.

Jacob Kummer was one of our EP Scholars at 2018 AAJ Fall Conference and -- he was busy.  In this issue, you will first see his keen reporting on the round-table entitled “Mentally Ill Offenders: Who is “My Keeper”?  and then Jacob gives us a synopsis of his finding on his tour of the The Red Hook Community Justice Center.  If you couldn’t be with us in Jersey City, or maybe didn’t see this session, or get on this tour, these works will be very helpful as reference, and to highlight the focus and concerns of the conference.

Lastly, Erin Persky has finished up her intense long-term project on courthouse Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE).  Basically, she has created a ‘toolbox’ for future project analysis that will only be beneficial to understand what is working within our justice environments!  Bravo Erin!

Make sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Kindest,

Kerry Feeney
