Academy of Architecture for Justice 2013 Fall Conference
Design-Build Best Practices
Thursday, 9/19, 8:00am
An Interview with Presenter Craig Unger
What made you interested in design-build project delivery? What do you think contributed to the rise in owners choosing design-build delivery?
Speed of completion - our Agency simply could not design & construct correctional facilities fast enough to keep up with the increased inmate capacity.
Two primary reasons owners are interested in design-build:
1) Fast track ability to activate facilities.
2) Avoiding the adversarial RFI, Change Order, Delays, Disputes, etc process.
How does design-build compare to other project delivery methods?
The results are indisputable: much quicker project completion time, better value for the budget; and claims avoidance.
What are some of the qualities that a design-build team should have in order to create a successful project?
First and foremost, a positive "past performance" history AND integration of the entire Project Team, e.g., Owner; Designer; Contractor; Key Trade Partners; Suppliers.
You are interested in reaching owners with your talk. How can your presentation benefit them?
There is no substitute for "learning by doing" & I will share the best practices (and lessons learned) from the Owners' perspective in executing an integrated design-build methodology.
How does one avoid “design-build done wrong”?
Get your Staff formal design-build training - particularly during the transitional phase of moving from the traditional linear design-bid-build delivery method to an integrated design-build approach.
What is one thing owners should avoid when planning a design-build project?
Disclose the Budget - providing a "range" is not helpful AND gets away from the "low bid" mentality - Select the best TEAM with the best SOLUTION!
