Building Materials

There are many new Building materials available for Architects to use today. Plastic-reinforced with Glass, artificial Stone, Glass-reinforced Concrete and others. Many of these materials are used decoratively or for cladding. The basic building blocks of Architecture remain Brick, Stone, Timber, Concrete, and Steel. These are the materials used to create monumental Buildings. Throughout the world and across history, Shelters have been built from Bamboo, Leaves, Vegetable Fibers, Fur, Reeds, Rocks, Ice and Mud. These materials have been used to create Architecture with temporary Structures. The natural world, however, may well have provided humans with ideas for materials and structures that would evolve into complex and thrilling architectural forms. Have birds' eggs, spider's webs, the hexagon of beehives, the ventillation of termites' nests affected the way we built just as the flight of birds affect the development of an aircraft? What seems remarkable after so many years is that the basic building blocks have change so little.
