With a population equal to that of Washington DC, Portland shares many similarities with Washington D.C., as it has one of the highest walkability scores, has a large community of bicyclists, and an expansive network of public transportation. Similarly, there is also a significant focus on urban planning.  At Perkins Eastman, not only have we designed many schools, each unique in its relationship to its students and community, but we also have a keen interest and responsibility to sustainable building design with an urban focus.  Building on the recent success of Dunbar High School in DC and Martin Luther King Jr Middle School in Boston - two of the country's most sustainable schools - there is a growing dialogue within Perkins Eastman’s K12 Practice area on Designing High-Performance Schools for the 21st Century Student. As we all continue to find ways beyond the walls of our office to engage the broader conversations taking place in the profession on 21st Century School Design, I find this conference to be an excellent opportunity to expand my knowledge and to bring back tangible examples and resources to the K12 Practice Area at Perkins Eastman and the greater DC-area K12 Community.


I graduated in 2009, during a time when many firms across the country were struck by a collapsing economy.  Rather than let that get me down, I took a job at a small firm in the Chicago suburbs, where I quickly realized that while it may take a few years before finding my “dream job”, there was still much to learn.  Five firms, an architectural license, and three cities later, I now find myself at Perkins Eastman Architects in Washington DC.  Learning from my colleagues who are helping to guide the conversation of Schools for the 21st Century, I am now much closer to having found my dream job.  Working with schools in DC and around the world, the work we do at Perkins Eastman continues to fuel my passion for meeting the needs of not only the students we serve, but more and more the communities where the schools reside.  Hearing of the CAE Portland Conference from a colleague who participated in the CAE Barcelona conference, I couldn’t be more excited by the prospect of engaging firsthand the K12 work being done in the US Northwest, around the conversation of Place + Pedagogy in K12 Environments!
