Join session leader Brian Meade, AIA, and presenters Johnathan Tallman, AIA, on Monday, October 30th from 9:45-11:15am as they share the collaborative process that led up to the milestone grand opening of the new Glen Ellyn Police Department.
A much-welcomed improvement over previously cramped facilities, the new Glen Ellyn Police Station incorporates public amenities as well as vastly improved security features for its officers. Join speakers as they explore creating this new stand-alone 30,000 square-foot facility, situated near the entrance of a popular park in a residential neighborhood adjacent to a busy commercial corridor, a location that allows the department to be easily accessible and of better service to the community.
Presenters will walk you through each phase of the project starting with choosing the prime residential location, developing the design and ultimately executing the vision. They will discuss the long journey and highly collaborative process that helped them execute the project goals. Various external factors that influenced the final design will be highlighted as well such as creating warmer, more relaxed feeling staff settings through the use of color, materials, and lighting effects. The resulting facility is a reflection of the time and energy invested during the planning stage of this state-of-the-art facility - three years of studies, one year of design and a year of construction.
Attendees will:
- Learn what methods of interdisciplinary collaboration and community partnership opportunities occurred with this project and examine the resulting spaces and potential programs that have been incorporated because of it.
- Understand the residential neighborhood’s concerns surrounding this project and how the team went about addressing their issues to achieve successful results.
- Examine the various site test fits that were performed and learn how an effective site evaluation criteria matrix helped guide a once divided Village Council to a unanimous site plan selection.
- Examine the design-build delivery method used on this project and how the cost control log was managed to bring other “add alternates” back into the final project.
