General information and expectations
The AIA Knowledge Communities are volunteer member-led special interest groups of the AIA national organization. They help members to connect with others who share the same passions and commitment—and develop a project that advances the profession and the collective work of the AIA. Traditionally each group is led by 5-8 leaders and supported by project-based committees along with partial AIA staff support.
As an AIA Knowledge Community, TAP serves as a resource for AIA members, the profession, and the public in the deployment of computer technology in the practice of architecture. TAP monitors the development of computer technology and its impact on architecture practice and the entire building life cycle, including design, construction, facility management, and retirement or reuse. We encourage all to participate in our international discourse by applying to serve on the Advisory Group or At-Large leadership group.
What do TAP leaders do?
- Assist in increasing engagement with TAP by developing resources including web content and education
- Present knowledge at associated organizational events, typically one to two times a year - travel for these events may or may not be reimbursed
- Participate in monthly coordination conference calls and general administrative functions of TAP
- Assist in the planning and implementation of AIA TAP’s annual symposium, co-located with the AIA Conference on Architecture
- Participate in the TAP discussion boards, facilitating conversation and community
- Carry out ad hoc projects as determined by the TAP leadership to further our mission
How is the TAP leadership structured?
- We currently bring on one new leader with a 5 year term each year, and another leader or two with a 2 year term
- 5-year leaders progress through a series of annual responsibilities for TAP projects (Year 1: discussion forum lead; Year 2: open forum(s); Year 3: serve as Chair, organize symposium; Year 4: resource development; Year 5: mentoring and transition planning)
- 2-year leaders are critical to executing TAP projects, often leading virtual course development, written content, and facilitating sessions during our symposium.
What are examples of recent TAP projects?
- We host an annual symposium, currently co-located with the AIA Conference on Architecture. Recent symposiums include 2026: Practical AI for Every Architect and 2025: Advancing a Sustainable Future through Technology Innovation
- TAP leaders are further involved with AIA Conference through hosting an open forum, developing sessions, and participating in the peer review process of all technology content.
- TAP partners with AIAU to develop live and on-demand courses, including 2026: The Ghost and the Machine: Defining Human & Computer Roles in Sustainable Design
- TAP is currently developing a guide to help local components develop their own local TAPs, as well as strengthening the connections between the currently active and thriving groups to develop a TAP network.
- TAP is currently develop a small firm guide to technology, to help small firms more easily understand and adopt the software that is the right fit for their firm.
How do I apply?
Applying to the TAP leadership is done through the annual AIA call for volunteers. For the latest information, please visit https://www.aia.org/volunteer. As of 2025 the AIA typically opens the call for volunteers in May.
The American Institute of Architects actively promotes a diverse profession, including race, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability or sexual orientation.
