RUDC Letter from the Chair (May 2025)

The American Institute of Architects is grounded in its nationwide network of local and state components, many of which host committees that reflect the AIA’s 21 Knowledge Communities. If you’re reading this, you’ve found your way to one—perhaps through your local chapter’s urban design, planning, or regional and urbanism-focused group. That’s how I began my journey, first as an inaugural member and then as Co-Chair of the AIA|DC Urban Design Committee (UD DC).

RUDC remains a dynamic and committed group—organizing design competitions, lecture series, film screenings, panel discussions, and public programs. As I’ve moved from local engagement to national leadership within RUDC, I’ve reflected often on the distinct roles these groups play. Local committees are embedded in their communities; you know your peers by name and collaborate on shared challenges. The national RUDC, in contrast, must speak to a broader and more diverse landscape—large cities and small towns alike—while championing design excellence and public policy that advance quality of life at scale. But hopefully, we can build these personal connections as well, just across more geographies.

In 2025, we are focused on strengthening that national-local connection and fostering knowledge exchange across the network. Key initiatives include:

  • AIAU Webinars: We’re developing a series of sessions exploring the transformation of underused office spaces—especially in suburban areas—into housing and community assets. These conversions hold tremendous promise for reactivating land and revitalizing neighborhoods.

  • RUDC Forum at AIA Conference on Architecture: Join us in Boston on June 5 at 11:00 AM for a fast-paced lightning-talk session featuring 10 speakers from across the country, followed by a networking gathering. It’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded colleagues and share ideas.

  • 2025 RUDC Symposium in Dallas: Save the date for October 28–29, when we’ll gather for this year’s Symposium. The Call for Speakers is now open—please visit rudc-symposium.com for more details and submission guidelines.

As we continue our work, RUDC is eager to collaborate more closely with state and local chapters. We recognize that local committees are innovating in ways that inspire us all. Let us know how we can support, amplify, or connect your work. Reach out anytime at our new email: aiarudckc@gmail.com, and stay tuned for new ways to be connected.

And if you see yourself as a connector, a leader, or a curious contributor ready to shape the next phase of national urban design dialogue—we want to hear from you. The volunteer application process for the next two-year appointments starting in 2026 is now open. We want all experiences, backgrounds, and geographies to apply and look forward to your voice shaping what RUDC can do next.

Get involved! We’ll see you there!
