Rehousing LA

The wildfires in Los Angeles have significantly impacted communities, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable, resilient, and equitable housing solutions. Rehousing LA, hosted by the AIA Housing and Community Development Knowledge Group, was an opportunity for architects, planners, and community leaders to discuss the ongoing clean-up efforts, the housing crisis, and innovative rebuilding strategies.

This 90-minute webinar, moderated by Femi Olamijulo and Kathleen Dorgan, was an engaging conversation featuring Steven Lewis, FAIA, NOMAC, Jessica Orlando, AIA, DBIA, WELL AP, Simon Ha, AIA, LEED AP, Mohamed Sharif, AIA RIBA, and Alex Athenson, AIA.

Participants learned:
1. Assess the impact of recent wildfires on housing in LA including displacement and housing needs and its impacts on the well-being of residents.
2. Understand the challenges in rebuilding affected communities including environmental, safety, and resilience impacts.
3. Learn from architects from AIA Los Angeles, AIA Pasadena & Foothill, NOMA, and grass roots non-profit Foothill Catalog engaged in post-disaster recovery about opportunities for architects, planners, and community advocates to partner on housing recovery and the long-term impacts.
4. Identify strategies for long-term scalable impact that will shape healthy, resilient communities.
