Hi everyone!
Eve Reynolds AIA, Arcolution LLC, based in Silver Lake, Los Angeles here. I'm writing to let you know of an event that I've put together with AIA/LA to address the regressive laws on the books in 20+ states now that ban trans and gender non-conforming people from using the bathroom of their identity in public buildings. These laws effectively prohibit these people from using the men's and women's restrooms in public buildings, which, as an architect, I find to be unconscionable. It is in our purview to provide facilities for all people in the public sphere.
We've gathered thought leaders from the Trans/GNC, legal/policy and architectural communities to come together on Monday, Sept. 22nd from 1-2pm PST, for a Zoom presentation. Our goal is to hone a policy statement to be presented to AIA National for their adoption and advocacy that centers the rights of Trans/GNC people to equitable and unfettered access to restrooms and to all other points of public accommodation within all public buildings. We will be discussing changes to the plumbing code and the development of a toolkit to aid and support architects across the country to advocate for equitable restroom accommodation.
