A quick guide to searching or keeping an eye out for Federal job postings on USAJobs.

Interested users can search USAJobs.com without an account. However, those wanting to apply or set alerts for new openings with specific parameters will need to create an account.

Some helpful notes and explanation of key filters to help find the most relevant positions to the architectural field:

    • Job Series: Job seekers will want to know the numerical designation of the job series which applies to the positions they are interested in. Specific series numbers can be searched for at this link. A few relevant job series are provided below, thanks to Ed Gauvreau, FAIA for the recommendations and input.
      • Series 0340 Program Management
      • Series 0800 Engineering and Architecture Group
    • Hiring Path: Generally speaking applicants who do not meet qualifications for special identifiers will want to check "open to the public" to delimit search results to unrestricted positions. Descriptions and explanations for specific hiring path qualifications can be found on the USAJobs Help Center page. Most higher grade (GS-13 and up) positions are usually hired internally to the hiring agency or department but do sometimes post open to the public. Senior Executive Service (SES) positions are generally open to the public but require experience (often in a specific narrative if not obvious in job history) in both Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) and position specific Technical Qualifications (TQs). Some common hiring paths are below:
      • Veterans: Anyone eligible for veteran preference
      • Recent Graduates: New graduates from an accredited educational or certification program within the last two years.
      • National Guard and Reserves: Usually a Title 32 or Title 5 Federal Technician position. These positions are open only to those currently serving in the National Guard and Reserves. On rare occasions qualified candidates will be hired on the condition that they enlist or commission into the component or branch which owns the position. I can provide more explanation on the Federal Technician program for those interested. I am currently serving in a Title 32 Federal Technician position.

I would like to note the info on the GS levels and jobs apply to the Executive Branch and not necessarily to the Judicial Branch. We also hire architects but don't have the same level structures, etc.  the Executive Branch does. Just different ones. Judicial positions are also listed in USA jobs usually.
