Description:
Research laboratories can significantly contribute to a building's overall energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and may pose safety risks to staff and occupants. To combat this, laboratory facilities must move towards electrifying their systems while also maintaining research performance. Join us for this webinar as we take a deeper dive into all-electric, high-performing laboratory projects covering challenges, strategies, and lessons learned.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore lessons learned in addressing common and unique design challenges for all-electric laboratories and their overall impact on research integrity and operational needs.
- Identify specific systems such as ventilation, refrigeration needs, and high-energy demand equipment within laboratories and how moving those systems to all-electric impacts air quality, operability, reduces embodied carbon, EUI, and lab safety.
- Understand how energy-intensive laboratories are and why decarbonizing this sector is critical to meeting climate goals, and the impact it can have on emissions reductions and addressing climate change.
- Review all-electric plant design options and how these approaches respond to carbon reduction goals, ensuring safety and maintaining research continuity.
Speakers:
George Reilly is a seasoned MEP engineer with over 20 years of experience. He began his career in the UK and has been working in California since 2009. His expertise spans projects across Europe, the US, the Middle East, and Asia, with significant experience in laboratory, cultural, higher education, and adaptive reuse sectors. As a member of the AIA Committee on the Environment (LA) and an AIA Honorary status awardee, George is recognized for his dedication to sustainability and his contributions to the field.
Yensi Izquierdo, PE is an associate principal with over 14 years' experience in the design and delivery of MEP engineering systems. Yensi has a wide range of project sector experience, including major office and workplace developments, understanding the technical demands and how to provide low energy, low carbon and reduced water usage design solutions.
Sidney Pilarski, PE is an Associate Mechanical Engineer at Buro Happold. Sidney has experience working with projects in the cultural, higher education and life science sectors.
Moderator - Ismar Enriquez, AIA, has been practicing for almost two decades and is currently a Design Lead & Project Manager at Practice. As a sustainability leader in California, Ismar addresses issues related to carbon neutrality, resiliency, climate justice, housing, and equity, and is involved in government policy change and advocacy efforts across the state. Ismar is currently serving on the AIA CA Board of Directors and as Climate Action Education Vice Chair.
