AAH1906: Pre/Post areas of Ambulatory Surgery: A human-centered approach to design

05-22-2019 09:13 AM

This webinar was sponsored by the Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH) on July 9, 2019 from 2–3pm ET. Earn 1 AIA LU/HSW.

Description

The healthcare design process often involves choosing between various design alternatives to support the needs of multiple stakeholders, including patients, their care partners and clinicians. To proactively address potential safety & quality concerns during the design process, it is crucial to understand how proposed design options may support the integration of new technologies, organizational processes, and users’ tasks into the built environment. A multi-year research project, focused on designing preoperative & postoperative workspaces in ambulatory surgical environments, included in-depth case studies, the development of a macro-ergonomic assessment, and a virtual reality (VR) research study evaluating three distinct preoperative room designs to determine which room best supports nursing work performance. This presentation will cover key findings from this process, including how to leverage VR to objectively evaluate user interactions with the environment. This session will also preview how findings from this multi-year project have been utilized to design a physical mock-up of a preoperative/postoperative room that will be used to test nurse work performance through further simulations.

Learning objectives

After participating in this webinar attendees will be equipped to:

  1. Understand how to implement a human-centered approach to support the design of safer more ergonomic preoperative and postoperative workspaces.
  2. Learn how to leverage VR simulation evaluations to identify potential safety and quality concerns during the design process.
  3. Learn how to use scenario-based simulations in VR to objectively evaluate user interactions with the environment.
  4. Explore how to engage clinical stakeholders in the design process.
