Senior Cohousing: A Community Approach to Independent Living
Hosted by the Design for Aging (DFA) Knowledge Community on May 17, 2021.
Imagine a living arrangement in which multiple, individually owned housing units (usually 20-30) are oriented around a common open area and a common house – a place where community is a way of life. Imagine residents who actively cooperate in planning the project, with one goal in mind – to recreate an old-fashioned neighborhood that supports friendly cooperation and socialization which lead to some level of mutual support. Imagine senior cohousing.
Speaker
Charles Durrett, AIA
, with Kathryn McCamant, introduced the concept of cohousing to the United States with the seminal book Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves. The latest edition is Creating Cohousing, Building Sustainable Communities. He has written several other books on cohousing, including “Senior Cohousing: A Community Approach to Independent Living—The Handbook”, “The Senior Cohousing Primer: Recent Examples and New Projects”, “Happily Ever Aftering in Cohousing: A Handbook for Community Living”, and “State-Of-The-Art Cohousing: Lessons Learned from Quimper Village”.
