The CAFM KC is pleased to present a webinar to explore an expanded role for today’s architectural programmers and facility planners as both analyst and information manager. This expanded role adds a new dimension as the profession adopts new tools and technology to meet client expectations for more cost effective, sustainable and integrated design solutions.
The advancement of technology enables new techniques for project delivery, team communication and information management. These developments are extending the role of programmers and facility planners as facilitators, analysts and documenters to an ongoing project function of information management, especially in regards to maintaining and refining client requirements. Ultimately, this information is incorporated into an integrated workplace management system for use over the life cycle of a facility.
This session will address a framework for the management of client requirement information over the building information life cycle. Applications to manage the amount and complexity of the programmatic information will be reviewed in addition to techniques for data management to set a framework for using available electronic tools to enhance the way programmers facility planners work with clients. A review of capabilities for virtual communication and team collaboration is included.

• Examine the fundamental principles of the Problem Seeking® method for schematic and development programming.
• Explore the approach and technologies required for integrated project delivery that maximizes the use of BIM.
• Evaluate how IPD was used on two research laboratories to define and procure of laboratory equipment.
• Analyze a building information life cycle model that integrates program of requirements, BIM and IWMS.

Steve has 35 years of contributions to the practice of architecture, spending his career helping to expand the architect's role in architectural programming and in research and evaluation of the built environment — adding value for clients throughout the world. He is co-author of Problem Seeking: An Architectural Programming Primer. The 5th edition was published in February 2012 by John Wiley & Sons.
Robin M. Ellerthorpe, FAIA, Architect, HOK– Chicago IL
Robin is an expert in technology applications for Integrated Workplace Management Systems (IWMS) and a variety of technology platforms that support building design, space management and facilities management. Robin’s expertise helps clients develop facilities strategies to maximize real estate resources and support their business objectives. He works with HOK’s clients to streamline facilities management tools and methodologies to ensure strong links between what is often disparate information.
