I cannot edit and replace on this web site so I'm forced to resubmit again, and again apologize for the inconvenience this causes; but wanted to amend my two earlier responses to William Farris. Mr. Farris was responding to the following quote from the essay I posted entitled, "Design with Intensity":
"If the challenge is accepted, architecture will enter a new period of city design. The effort will force it to enter the public arena, and this is where inspiration is greeted with skepticism until logic is defended with knowledge." - Hosack
"I would have thought that knowledge should be defended with logic. Logic is a defense, in and of itself?" - Farris
Inspiration and logic stimulate the search for documented knowledge that can be memorized. The accumulation of knowledge stimulates further inspiration and logic. Knowledge becomes a foundation for debate and defense of further inspiration and logic. As the circle expands, it continues to threaten entrenched opinion with the risk of change. We call it adaptation when successful, and it begins with land that is a gift we do not own.
Insight and talent produce fine art with opinion and ability mistaken for logic. Insight is priceless, but it remains isolated until inspiration and logic produce knowledge that can be memorized to duplicate success. Public debate, persuasion and benefit are compromised up to this point, because insight based on the logic of opinion is too easily challenged by the opposition. We should be thankful for this fact, because logic has eventually overcome misguided opinion to produce knowledge throughout history. - Hosack
