The AIA/CAE K-12 Sub-Committee is attempting to develop a network of state and local Chapter committees serving K-12 practitioners. This network will share knowledge, issues, and experiences from around the country to:
- Contribute / improve the practice of K-12 architects
- Promote learning opportunities for K -12 architects
- Contribute to the design of 21st Century Learning Environments
- Share experiences on influencing agencies that control design and construction
Here are 6 Chapter committees currently serving their chapter / practice areas. If your chapter has a similar committee, please let us know.
Boston Society of Architects / Educational Facilities Committee
The Boston Society of Architects (BSA), a Chapter of the AIA has a committee known as the Educational Facilities Committee. The committee has nearly 100 members from over 30 architectural firms, two cities, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), OPM's and elsewhere.
The committee meets monthly at the offices of the BSA. Each meeting has a topic with member and outside speakers. The monthly 1 ½ hour meetings typically draw 20 to 30 individuals.
The committee has a working relationship with the MSBA and has authored papers to the MSBA on regulatory, standards and policy issues.
The committee has never adopted a CAE designation, likely similar to the BSA has never adopted the AIA / Boston designation.

Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE/DC)
Mission Statement:
The Washington DC Committee on Architecture for Education is a forum to gather a broad range of stakeholders (designers, builders, learners, educators, administrators, and the public) interested in the design of great educational environments. This forum will promote the sharing of best practices, the exchange of innovative ideas, and the celebration and study of local successes and resources.
Our goals will be accomplished by tapping the wealth of resources within the Committee and the National Capital Region through group discussions, tours, workshops, roundtables, and lectures as appropriate. The committee's web site will be used to document and disseminate the body of knowledge presented and developed by the committee and its activities.
Meetings are open to the public and are typically held on the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m.

Architecture for Education
The AIA New York Chapter's "Committee on Architecture for Education" (CAE) is the local affiliate of AIA National's CAE. The committee provides and organizes events where architects, educators, educational administrators, and the public can meet and exchange ideas that may promote better educational facilities of all kinds.
We provide opportunities where the design community can meet the people who administrate the various agencies that control design and construction budgets and discuss mutual concerns and interests. Our goal includes maintaining ties to other committees and affiliated organizations for events of mutual interest at both the local and national level.
Such events are prepared in monthly "Planning Meetings" open to all committee members and other interested AIA members. Recently, we identified the following topics that we consider relevant for the design of educational facilities:
- What kind of space is conducive to individual learning and works for inter-class projects?
- How do school buildings meet and/or encourage community needs?
- Are new schools flexible enough to meet future needs?
We encourage you to come and expend on this list or add new topics to it!
