In my little Town of Pound Ridge, NY a person has asked if they could be buried in one of our Landmarked Cemetaries. They are all on Town -owned land. Does anyone know if there is a State Ordinance about this?

If there are grave lots to be sold they should be able to use them. History marches on.

    Carol -
A little more background information may be helpful.  Note that the "Landmark" term relates to the National Park Service which has designated National Historic Landmarks.  There are a few cemeteries that are National Historic Landmarks, although I'm not sure if any are in your area.  You can look at this list: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/nationalhistoriclandmarks/list-of-nhls-by-state.htm

Cemeteries could also be designated as 'historic' by a local government body.  Quick google search returned lead me to your local historic board:  https://www.townofpoundridge.com/boardsandcommissions-lhdc

    Hope that is helpful!

Yes these are local landmarked cemeteries by the Pound Ridge Landmarks & Historic District Commission of which I am Chair. Our former Town employee who was in charge of maintaining these cemeteries passed away a number of years ago and I do not believe anything has been done by the new person in charge. He has not made any reports to the Commission and I have been neglectful in requesting that he do so. So we now have two issues: a local person wants to be buried in one of them; A few people noticed a cemetery in a state of disrepair. We think it is not a Landmark but on private property. But I am now on a mission to at least resolve the maintenance issues. Thank you for all the advice. I have done a ton of research and hope to get this on track.

They'll need to ask the town if the cemeteries are still accepting burials and if so, how to buy a plot. That's the only thing that will determine if they can be buried there or not.
